Things to do in Groton this weekend

This weekend, Jul 31 – Aug 2

Groton sits right across the river from New London, with its own waterfront, parks and a steady weekend calendar. Here's what's on this weekend, updated all week.

Where things happen in Groton

Groton spreads out more than New London, so a weekend here tends to move between a few spots near the water. Avery Point, the UConn campus out on the point, has a lighthouse, open lawns and a summer concert series with the Sound right behind the stage. Fort Griswold Battlefield State Park sits up above the river, with the monument and the long view back toward New London. For the outdoors, Bluff Point is the big one, a long walk out to the water on the coastal reserve, and Esker Point Beach down in Noank runs free concerts on summer evenings. Noank itself is worth the trip for the harbor. The Submarine Force Museum and the USS Nautilus are free to visit on the north end of town.

Groton events by category

Groton leans outdoors. The state parks, the beaches and the waterfront carry a lot of the weekend, and families have plenty to work with between the museums and the parks. There's a regular run of community and civic events around the town, plus markets and food through the warmer months. Music picks up in summer with the concert series at Avery Point and Esker Point. Filter the page by what you're in the mood for and it'll show only this weekend's events.

Planning your visit

Groton is a driving town more than a walking one, so plan on the car between stops. The state parks and beaches can fill up on a good summer day, so earlier is easier for parking at Bluff Point and Esker Point. Most of the outdoor spots are free or cheap to get into, and a lot of the summer concerts are free too. New events post here all week, so check back Friday for the full picture of the weekend.
