Where things happen in New London
Most of what happens in New London happens within a few walkable blocks. Downtown runs along Bank Street and State Street, where the bars, restaurants and small music rooms sit a short walk from the train station and the water. The Garde Arts Center anchors the calendar with touring music, comedy and film in a restored 1926 theater, and a couple of blocks over, Hygienic Art Park puts on outdoor shows and its long-running art nights. For daytime, the Lyman Allyn Art Museum and the Custom House Maritime Museum are both close to the center, and Fort Trumbull State Park gives you the harbor from the other side. In summer, Ocean Beach Park is the one people mean when they say the beach, with a boardwalk, a pool and something on most weekends.

Live music and nightlife carry a lot of the weekend here, from the Bank Street bars to bigger nights at the Garde. Arts and culture run close behind, between the museums, the openings at Hygienic and the theater season. Families tend to point toward Ocean Beach in summer and the parks year round, and there's a steady run of markets, community days and civic events downtown. Planning your visit
New London is easy to reach and easy to get around once you're here. Amtrak and Shore Line East trains stop right downtown, the ferries run from the same stretch of waterfront, and most of the bars, venues and restaurants are close enough to leave the car for the night. Coming in from the base, the college or one of the nearby towns? Check back Friday for the full weekend, since new events post all week.
